Shane Beamer targeting ‘special teams guru’ for South Carolina staff

Shane Beamer’s first South Carolina coaching staff may include a “special teams guru.”
FootballScoop is reporting that Memphis special teams coordinator Pete Lembo is expected to join Beamer’s Gamecocks staff in a similar capacity.
Lembo joined the Memphis staff in January 2019. He is widely recognized as one of college football’s top special teams tacticians. In his first year at Memphis, Lembo markedly improved what was already one of the country’s top units. Memphis special teams made a leap up the ESPN Team Efficiency Rankings from 59th in 2018 – season prior to his arrival at Memphis – to 2nd in 2019. The Tigers also earned college football’s highest rating for “Special Teams Points Added” from Championships Analytics Inc. and were ranked in the top-10 for overall special teams by FootballOutsiders.com.
Lembo has a 112-65 record as a head coach from his time at Elon (2006-10) and Ball State (2011-15). He has been in coaching since 1992, starting as a graduate assistant at Albany.
