Football is a dangerous sport, and sadly, every now and then a player is forced to retire from the game due to severe injuries.
On Sunday, it was reported that South Carolina redshirt freshman LB Davonne Bowen was retiring from the game after a neck injury made it dangerous to keep playing.
According to SportsTalkSC, the situation was revealed to Bowen two or three weeks ago:
USC RS frosh LB Davonne Bowen confirmed tonight he has retired from football due to a neck injury that has made it too dangerous for him to play. Bowen learned of his situation 2-3 weeks ago. He will remain at USC on medical hardship. Bowen was a Shrine Bowler from Woodmont.

Bowen was a 3-star recruit in the 2017 class and played high school football at Woodmont High School in Piedmont, South Carolina.
He took a redshirt last fall, but now he’ll hang up his cleats before he has a chance to appear in a game for the Gamecocks. Here’s hoping he finds success in whatever he does next.
