Report: South Carolina to spend Thanksgiving interviewing third head coaching candidate
The South Carolina Gamecocks are in the midst of a coaching search after firing coach Will Muschamp a couple of weeks ago.
According to reports, Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell and Louisiana’s Billy Napier have interviewed for the position, and a third interview is coming tomorrow.
Per ESPN’s Chris Low, Oklahoma OC Shane Beamer will spend his Thanksgiving interviewing for the Gamecocks’ job.
Beamer was an assistant under Steve Spurrier at South Carolina from 2007 to 2010, so he’s familiar with the area and the program. Oklahoma’s game this week was postponed due to COVID-19 issues.
Making things more difficult during this search is that South Carolina president Bob Caslen announced on Wednesday that he had tested positive for COVID-19. We’ll see what happens with the search moving forward.
Uh, oh. With the prez out of the picture Tanner is looking to give the job to one of his drinking buddies. Watch out!
I’ll do it for free for 5 years, but only if there’s a 15 million buyout clause
I’m cheap because I’ve been lobbying for over a year for this job. I’ll take 1 million (after taxes) per year and I’ll have no buy out clause. They still haven’t called.
They might know your betting habits against the team.
Rooster…good point. I got burned a couple times this year. Especially the Auburn game.
tailwhip…Best comment of the day.
In about 5 years Connor Shaw will have enough experience to be hc at usc. Then watch out. That guy knows how to win and he loves usc with all his heart.
Nice thought – I hope I live to see it happen!
The interviews are happening via Zoom. They’ve already interviewed a coach with the virus. The president having it does nothing to the search. Surprising that they have interviewed two guys and not much chatter out there about either interview.
Don’t think we’ll here much about what happens. Still don’t know much about what actually happened in the 2015 search. The most news worthy item was Rich Rodriguez turned down the job they never offered him, problem was they interviewed Rich Rodriguez.
The S.C. coaching search should also include the ark OC. Briles. Has some baggage but not as much as freeze and is a talented young offensive mind. If you don’t get someone on the cutting edge of offense you are making a mistake. When we have another search next season I hope Phil has enough foresight to go that route.
Hopefully Tanner (or) whoever makes the real decision hires a guy that currently is a head coach, not another coordinator. Running a successful program is far more complex than merely managing the defense of a program. South Carolina football does not have time for another head coach in-training. *Jamey Chadwell @ Coastal Carolina.
Let’s all face the facts: Dabo is not the smartest guy in the room but he understands that and is an excellent CEO of Clemson’s program plus a good motivator. If he can do it, it can be done at South Carolina with the right hire. Today’s college football world is about offense-offense-offense.
Yep, hiring a position coach at Clemson for HC really didn’t work out for them, did it?
Rooster…Dabo understands what his assets are & also understands what his deficiencies are and has embraced the role of being the CEO of Clemson football. Most men would not do that…you know that as well as I do. It’s a man-thing”.
Dabo is the exception not the rule.
Let’s also not forget Dabo lost to SC 5 times in a row, guy wasn’t always the golden child. A weak ACC is what helped him build.
Napier or Chadwell. And just a guess, but Chadwell might make a better attempt to get decommits to come back. But I have nothing to base that on except his proximity to SC.
The decommits weren’t SEC caliber players any way. So they won’t be missed.
Beamer will do fine, keep Bobo, keep Shaw get rid of hill at quarterback and every body on Defensive coaching staff. We need someone to build us a Defense.
Dodo needs to go especially after trotting Hill out last week, that completely dqs him from a job here.
We had a chance to hire several very good coaches after spurrier and Tanner couldn’t land the deal so we settled for a very predictable tenure under Muschamp. Now Hugh Freeze is available but Tanner can’t close the deal with him apparently and we’ll have to settle for a coach who we hope has the ability to compete in the highest caliber of college football in the world. FIRE RAY TANNER. HE CAN’T CLOSE THE DEAL WITH A DECENT HIGH LEVEL COACH!!!!!!
