Steve Spurrier Jr. had spent the last 11 seasons as the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina under his legendary father.

Now, Spurrier Jr. is leaving the school, and the conference.

Sources told The Oklahoman’s Jason Kersey that he’ll be joining the Sooners’ staff in an off-the-field capacity.

After retiring in the middle of last season, Spurrier Sr. also took an off-the-field role less than a month ago as an ambassador with South Carolina.

Spurrier Jr. has ties to the Oklahoma program, having worked as the receivers coach there for three seasons from 1999-01. He also worked at Arizona with current Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.

Oklahoma, the reigning Big 12 champions, reached the College Football Playoff last season before losing 37-17 to Clemson in the semifinal.
