Shane Beamer wants to see more game-breaking plays from his special teams unit.

Beamer Ball, the idea that South Carolina wants to be attacking on all plays and in all 3 phases of the game, has proven effective in the past. And according to the man himself, he insists that the special teams unit has been just OK so far this season.

Beamer spoke on the unit at the SEC’s weekly teleconference Wednesday afternoon:

“I think we’ve been OK. It’s not what we expect around here,” Beamer said. “We haven’t had as many game-breaking plays, if you will. We got a long punt return the other night, which was good. We haven’t blocked any punts yet. Our return game on kickoff return, we really haven’t had a chance to get that going. Punt coverage we’ve been OK. We’ve got a big challenge this week with Tennessee. So overall, I think we’ve been solid, it’s not what we expect though, because we expect to make more momentum plays, and we’ve had some of them…We haven’t been bad, but we haven’t been as good as we expect to be. I think a lot of that is on when we’re playing.”

The Gamecocks will need all the game-changing plays they can get this week against the Vols. Tennessee is in desperate need of a dominant win this season after a slow start out of the gate, and Neyland Stadium will be rocking with thousands of Vols fans looking to make life difficult for the team that knocked the Vols out of the CFP last season.

Buckle up. Tennessee-South Carolina kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
