Shane Beamer issues apology to fans after South Carolina's penalty-filled loss to LSU
Shane Beamer and South Carolina suffered a heartbreaking 36-33 loss to No. 16 LSU in Columbia on Saturday, a game in which the Gamecocks had a 17-point lead but were whistled for 13 penalties.
While South Carolina fans will feel as if the officiating crew favored the Tigers in this one, Beamer wasn’t in a mood to point the finger.
“I want to apologize to our fans … 13 penalties. You’re not going to win football games in the SEC with 13 penalties,” Beamer said, according to GoGamecocks.com.
The Gamecocks were up 17-0 early in the 2nd quarter. But LSU eventually found its way back into the contest, with the teams exchanging leads before the Tigers went ahead for good on Josh Williams’ short touchdown run with just over a minute left. Alex Herrera’s field goal try from 49 yards out with no time remaining was no good as the Gamecocks couldn’t force the game into overtime.
South Carolina returns home to face Akron in Week 4. It’s a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPNU.

Hot seat is back on for Beamer.
Please tell us you’re joking…..
Is it a hot seat? The team keeps improving week by week so it looks like the coaches are doing the job they are supposed to do. The mistakes are a bit frustrating but are not necessarily on the coaches. All teams seem to be more error prone in this new age of one year rent-a-players. I loved about 80 percent of the players’ effort and hated the 20 percent that was penalties and bad tackles. And the team was still in the game even after our QB1 went down at half time.
All of that is irrelevant if you can’t win a game where you’re up 17-0 before the half.
You can’t win a game when phantom penalties kill your drives and pic 6
Amen.
I agree….the bottom line is that SC was utterly jobbed today by the refs, whose primary interest is to protect any ranked team’s standing….its the way the SEC rolls….one of many reasons to despise the conference, excluding the Gamecocks, of course. Give credit to LSU’s coaching staff, though….they made adjustments, and SC did not…furthermore, when LSU made adjustments, SC simply had no answers. I’ve said it before, I’ll keep saying it….Beamer is a fine HC, but his coordinators are woeful.
Well, I guess that gives you 2 choices. get the players, and play well enough to get ranked, or start a drive to have USCe leave the conference.
I vote SC should leave. Not a benefit to the conf anyway.
It gives me two choices? Would that it were, but it’s not up to me….obviously….and there are more than two choices. A third “choice” involves Beamer hiring two great coordinators who can optimize SC’s talent; that’s what at I’d really like to see.
this right here exemplifies the typical jawjaw fan. I’ve been to Athens many times for games and have always been spit at, cursed at, you name it. Never commented back, never antagonized anyone. The majority of them are incredibly obnoxious drunk morons. and yes I use my real name.
The officials got things wrong and missed calls. But the 17 point lead evaporating had nothing to do with officiating, that was mostly 2nd have issues. It was what you state about coaching. The tide began turning in the 2nd qtr. LSU’s staff figured some things out as the game went, USC’s didn’t.
*2nd half issues
We will agree that the coaching, specifically both coordinators, were out-coached. That said, we will agree to disagree that “the 17 point lead evaporating had nothing to do with officiating” because the fact is that it should have been more than a 17 point lead, and would have been, had the officials not rescued LSU with a BS horse-collar tackle call. Seems to me that you believe LSU was destined to win no matter what….I strongly disagree. In fifty years of playing, watching and studying football, I’ve never, ever, seen two defensive TD’s taken off the board. If even one of those scores stands, SC (deservedly) wins that game.
You think I believe LSU was destined to win? If you want to create points I don’t make only to disagree with them I will leave you and my alter ego to sort it out. So to address the point I made about the lead: If the first pick-six stands, SC is up by two scores. That is all we know, we have no idea how the game plays out after that. I didn’t disagree with that call. Regardless of that play, the fact of what happened was Gamecocks went up by 17. The officials didn’t cause that lead to dwindle. By the time of the egregiousness of the 2nd half officiating that lead was gone. A case is rightfully made that affected the outcome of the game due to the bogus OPI and the unnecessary roughness penalty, but that is a different matter.
At least the university saves the fine for the students rushing the field.
