Shane Beamer makes final case for South Carolina in College Football Playoff race
Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks ended the regular season with a 9-3 record. The team finished as one of the hottest in football, winning their final 6 games in a row.
Even still, the Gamecocks are currently on the outside of the Playoff picture. In the latest College Football Playoff rankings, the Gamecocks came in at No. 14 – behind the likes of Alabama and Ole Miss. South Carolina is No. 15 in strength of schedule and No. 14 in ESPN’s Football Power Index. The team’s 3 losses came to LSU, Ole Miss, and Alabama.
On Saturday, Beamer appeared on Marty & McGee to advocate for his team and explain why they should be in the Playoff.
“”One, the league that we play in. Great venues, great players in this league,” Beamer said. “It’s a grind every single week.”
He continued: “We have two losses by a total of five points in this conference. We’ve beaten four ranked teams in the month of November alone.”
Warde Manuel, chair of the CFP committee, has said that teams that aren’t playing this weekend won’t be moved in or out of the top 12. In other words, since South Carolina isn’t in the top 12 now, they won’t be after this weekend either.
Beamer finds this hard to accept, considering the Gamecocks defeated Clemson last weekend. After Saturday, the Tigers could be the ACC champions, which would give the Gamecocks a road win over a conference champion.
“We could potentially have a win over the ACC champions on their home field. If that ain’t a data point I don’t know what is,” said Beamer. “That’s just the frustrating thing, is to not even take that into context.”
“If I saw the South Carolina Gamecocks pop up on the bracket as my first-round matchup, I wouldn’t be happy with the way we’re playing right now.”@CoachSBeamer on why @GamecockFB should be in the CFB Playoff pic.twitter.com/vnWmHSPymC
