Shane Beamer hired Dowell Loggains as South Carolina’s new offensive coordinator earlier this week.

Loggains replaces Marcus Satterfield, who left Columbia to take the same position under Matt Rhule at Nebraska.

Since news of the hire broke, it has not been widely lauded in college football circles, which Beamer addressed Wednesday.

“I easily could have hired one of the hot names,” Beamer said. “I’m not interested in winning the press conference. I’m interested in hiring the guy that can continue to move this program forward. … We hired a big-time coach and couldn’t be more excited about hiring Dowell.”

Beamer was quick to point out that Loggains had worked under coaches like Bill Parcells, Sean Peyton, and Kyle Shanahan, and said, “You don’t (call plays) in the NFL … without knowing what you’re doing.”

Added Beamer: “We hired a big-time coach and couldn’t be more excited about hiring Dowell.”

Beamer also pointed to staff members Pete Lembo and Clayton White, hires that didn’t create much buzz, and how those have worked out, and also reminded people that judging Loggains based solely on the stats that his past offenses put up would be a mistake, as there are always extenuating circumstances.

He also reminded fans and media about the direction that his program is trending, adding, “Part of that momentum we’ve created is hiring Dowell Loggains as our offensive coordinator.”

While Loggains will be joining the South Carolina staff in the near future, Beamer did add that his new OC would not call plays in the Gamecocks’ Gator Bowl matchup with Notre Dame.
