Shane Beamer responds to slow start in Tennessee loss, addresses controversial play calling
Shane Beamer said he understands that South Carolina must adjust to a fast-paced offense like Tennessee showed on Saturday because it won’t be the last time the Gamecocks see it.
The coach addressed the media after the 45-20 loss to the Vols, and added that he was proud with the way South Carolina bounced back later in the game.
Beamer was also asked about the play-calling, both early in this game, and throughout the season, and gave a spirited response. The Gamecocks had a promising drive early in the game that ended with an interception near the goal line.
Here’s a sample of some of his comments:
Is there a mechanism to overturn a pre-determined playcall, in that situation?
Beamer: “The mechanism is me, as the head coach, to overrule the call when I hear it on the headphones. I liked the call.”

Beamer is now addressing the media…proud of how his guard competed in the second half, lot to build on, not the start they wanted, first quarter was as bad as you can have despite a great week of practice and preparation. #Gamecocks

Beamer: They’ve got to do a better job of starting fast, this won’t be the last fast offense they will see, got to tackle better than they did in the first half. #Gamecocks

Shane Beamer on The Play: Had it in all week. Had talked about it that they were going to put it in the first time they were inside the 5.
He mentions that, in hindsight, should have just kept running. Burch also had the option to run, but the throw was the design.

Beamer: Tempo got them early, had some misalignments, some miscommunications in the secondary, that contributed to their first half problems. #Gamecocks

Beamer: On the first quarter drive that died at the one, the Burch play they had worked all week, he’s thrown that well, hindsight, should have continued to run the ball. They had talked about it that first time they got inside the five, they would run that play. #Gamecocks

Beamer: Said he can overrule a play call, and he liked the call with Burch at the goal line, 270 pound guy who can run and has completed that pass a lot in practice, just didn’t execute. #Gamecocks

Shane, how would you label the play-calling this year?
“Good.”
(Follows) — What do you want me to say, that it’s been terrible? Are there plays that Marcus would like to have back? Yeah. Whatever we are offensively right now, it’s not good enough.

Beamer said the fake punt call was something South Carolina saw schematically with Tennessee earlier in the week and it came again today.
“Kai’s got a great arm. He’s a weapon back there and Payton made a nice catch as well.

Beamer on the Jordan Burch interception:
“That was a play we’ve been working on all week…We had talked about it as a staff, first time we got down there we wanted to get to that call.”
In short, it was scripted to some degree.
