Spencer Rattler has some competition at South Carolina. While he may start the season, backup quarterback Luke Doty is fighting to make sure it’s not a foregone conclusion.

All his extra effort has garnered the attention of head coach Shane Beamer, who heaped praises on the young QB.

Rattler may have made a splash when he landed in South Carolina, Doty has been quietly making strides in both play and leadership. The QB completed 60.1% of his passes for 975 yards with 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 2021 before being sidelined with a foot injury. Doty committed to South Carolina in 2018 after receiving 19 offers, including Auburn and North Carolina.

In addition to his play, Doty’s loyalty to the team during what was certainly a tumultuous situation is also something that didn’t go unnoticed. Beamer was complimentary to the QB, saying “He stayed here, he’s made Spencer better, he’s made himself better and it’s showing right now. So excited about all of our quarterbacks, but really proud of Luke and what he’s doing.”
