Leadership at the University of South Carolina had some PR blunders this month with statements about the future of the football program, but it appears athletic director Ray Tanner and school president Bob Caslen are now on the same page and relaying the same message: Will Muschamp is the coach of the Gamecocks for the foreseeable future.

Tanner joined 107.5 The Game on Wednesday and discussed Muschamp’s future in Columbia.

“Will Muschamp “is our football coach and I expect him to be our football coach for a long, long time,” Tanner said, per Josh Kendall. “I believe strongly that our fan base and our biggest supporters are going to be very happy at some point. It’s not today.”

After making that statement, Tanner was asked why he believes in Muschamp.

“Football is a process,” Tanner replied, per Kendall. “If there’s one sport that it does take time (it’s football). We’re certainly not happy with where we are right now record wise, but I personally believe the investment is being made.”

Muschamp is 54-45 in seven-plus seasons as a head coach. He was at the 28-21 mark when he was fired in his fourth season at Florida. Muschamp is 26-24 in three-plus seasons at South Carolina.

The Gamecocks finish the 2019 season against arch-rival Clemson on Saturday. Muschamp has yet to lead South Carolina to victory over the Tigers. Clemson is on a five-game winning streak in the rivalry. Dabo Swinney’s squad is favored by 27.5 points for Saturday’s noon ET game, according to Caesars Sportsbook.
