Lamont Paris’ South Carolina squad is seeing another player hit the transfer portal. Chico Carter Jr. is entering his name into the portal for the second time in his career, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

Carter is looking at his 2023-24 options as a graduate transfer.

A Columbia, South Carolina native, Carter began his college career at Murray State, where he earned 2 letters. He joined the Gamecocks as a junior for the 2021-22 campaign.

Carter was considered a senior this past season. The NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver grants him an extra year of eligibility he can use for next season.

Carter is the fourth South Carolina scholarship player to hit the portal, joining center Tre-Vaughn Minott, forward Ja’Von Benson, and forward Daniel Hankins-Sanford.

Portal season in college basketball

In recent years, we’ve seen numerous programs deal with numerous outgoing and incoming transfers as coaches seemingly remake their rosters every offseason.

Carter’s transfer may come as a surprise considering he’s a Columbia native who started 25 games this season. With coaching changes, though, fans should always expect an increase in transfers.
