South Carolina fans are frustrated with Will Muschamp, but his massive buyout looms large
After back-to-back wins at Vanderbilt and vs. Auburn, many South Carolina fans were confident their Gamecocks could go into Baton Rouge and take down a struggling LSU squad on Saturday night.
That did not happen at all, as LSU cruised to an impressive 52-24 victory in a game that was never in doubt.
Fans are frustrated with embattled coach Will Muschamp, and many think the school should move on and hire a new coach. However, that may not happen before the end of next season.
Budgets are already tight across college sports due to the pandemic, and then there’s the matter of Muschamp’s massive buyout.
Per the USA TODAY coaches salaries database, the Gamecocks would owe Muschamp a whopping $15,378,750 if they fired him after Dec. 1, 2020.
Is that an amount South Carolina would be comfortable with paying? Or, will we see Muschamp back on the sidelines in 2021? He still has a few weeks left to pick up some big wins.
Time for schools to get together and find a solution to these ridiculous buyouts. Getting millions for a screw up job is insane. At the very least, contracts should have guaranteed “minimum” buyouts. Just ridiculous. We are out here trying to do our best, keep our positions and jobs and we have to read stories about screwups like this guy, Morris and Malzahn who would already be gone at Auburn if not for that record setting buyout. Auburn without the gifts is 1-4 but he will be back next year because of the money.
I could not agree more. This flunky got $1.2 million to beat Charleston Southern last year. Mind-blowing.
Any head coach’s buyout should be One(1) years salary…no more and contracts should be extended 2 years at most…every coach. Will’s buyout and Gus’s buyout are both totally insane.
Schools in the future need to make buyouts more reasonable. I would say if you do not win a certain amount of games your buyout is reduced.
Take a look at Pittman contract. I know, people are getting tired of hearing about he and Arkansas. But, take a look at his contract and what Arkansas’ AD tried to do. It helped that it was a first time head coach they were signing, but it is performance based and all crazy $$$ incentives are performance based. The AD even stated at the time they signed he was trying to make a push for more schools to follow the same sort of format so they can gain the control back from Agents setting these ridiculous contracts. I guess with the amount of $$$ Arkansas spent in recent years for buyouts, they had no choice. But, if more schools would get on board then these buyouts would be reigned in.
Stop giving out stupid crazy contracts.
Speaking just for me and most of the SEC, please Coots, oh please keep Muschamp.
We need a laughingstock and poor Will and the Cooter nation are such low hanging fruit.
All for Muschamp to remain coach of the Dumpster Fire raging in Columbia please say yeah
Thanks,

Seems about right.
Man, talk about dumpster fires and low hanging fruit… You chose a username that was the only coach Muschamp could beat consistently. LOL!
I should have known better than to click on this article. This is what I get for being unmotivated to do something that matters this afternoon. Not a single thing in here is news or thought provoking. The buyout keeps him in Columbia for 2021, regardless of 2020’s performance, this has never been a question.
The problem is the AD’s that give out these contracts. Ray Tanner gave a hell of a contract to a failed coach.
Tanner needs to go first & and about 5 minutes later it’s Will’s turn in the President’s office.
I will be surprised if they can afford to fire either. SC is stuck for a couple more years.
Is this still a topic for discussion?
Let Dawn Staley coach the rest of the season. I bet you that she will be a tremendous improvement.
2 words:
1) Jimmy
2) Sexton
Sexton was making a sale and doing his job for his client. It was Tanner that made the hire. Honestly, what coach has Tanner hired that has produced dividends? If Tanner were in my upper management, he’d be gone. If he were a stock, he would have been sold. Face it, our best coaches were hired by a competent AD before Tanner. Tanner again is a good coach, an AD he is not. He is in way over his head and anyone with business skills can see it from the first time he conducted a coaching search. Muschamp is a TANNER result.
Jimmy sexton flies around the SEC to negotiate these mega-deals in his private jet…he’s laughing all the way to the bank every year.
Thank. You. Ray. Tanner.
Malzahn has at least had a few good moments in his coaching career. Muschump hasn’t had “any” good years at SC. Beating UGA last year was the bright spot in a very bad coaching hire and career.
Fire the bum already.
