South Carolina forward Ja’Von Benson has entered the transfer portal, according to a report.

VerbalCommits was 1st to report that news on Monday afternoon, which has since been confirmed by multiple other outlets. Benson just finished his 3rd season at South Carolina.

Benson played in just 6 games this season for the Gamecocks. His best season with the program came a year when ago when he played in 6 games and averaged 9 minutes per contest.

He played in 15 games across 3 seasons for South Carolina. Benson was a 3-star prospect for the Gamecocks in the class of 2020. He opted to stay with the program after last season to be on the team in Lamont Paris’ 1st season.

What this means for South Carolina

The Gamecocks will likely have a clean slate to start next season. GG Jackson, the former 5-star recruit, is expected to enter the 2023 NBA Draft. Other players could also follow Benson into the transfer portal.

South Carolina struggled mightily in 2022-23. The Gamecocks went 11-21 in this season and won just 4 SEC games. With Jackson, Benson and other players set to depart, Paris and his staff will work to improve the roster for next season.

South Carolina has not reached the NCAA Tournament since it went to the Final Four in 2017 under Frank Martin.
