South Carolina added a high-profile point guard via the transfer portal on Wednesday morning.

Former Minnesota guard Ta’Lon Cooper has announced his commitment to the Gamecocks. Coper averaged 9.8 points and 6.3 assists per game last season for the Gophers.

Cooper is a significant pickup for a South Carolina team that will be looking to take a big step forward in 2023-24. Point guard specifically is an area of improvement, as Meechie Johnson led the team with just 3.6 assists per game.

South Carolina will be Cooper’s third program. He began his career at Morehead State for 3 seasons before moving on to Minnesota. Last season was his lone campaign with the Gophers. In addition to his raw stats, Cooper was an efficient 3-point shooter and made 37.8% of his attempts from long range.

With GG Jackson turning pro, South Carolina’s offense is expected to look much different in 2023-24. Lamont Paris and his staff are expected to remain aggressive in the transfer portal over the next few weeks.
