South Carolina had a rough season opener against North Carolina, falling 31-17 in the Duke’s Mayo Classic. There were, however, individual bright spots for the Gamecocks.

Xavier Legette is being recognized for a monster outing in Charlotte. Legette logged 9 receptions for 178 yards, earning him the Senior Bowl’s Stock Up Player of the Week honor.

Legette is in his fifth season with the Gamecocks. His breakout performance came in the Gator Bowl when he recorded 7 receptions for new career highs of 78 yards and 2 touchdowns. The momentum carried into Saturday, as he has already eclipsed his 2022 receiving total of 167 yards.

Legette is also a special teams weapon. Last season, he was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week after he returned the opening kickoff against Texas A&M for a touchdown, giving him 4 total touchdowns for the season.

Against North Carolina, Spencer Rattler spread the ball around, racking up 30 completions to 8 different receivers. Legette was the only Gamecock pass-catcher to hit triple-digit receiving yards.

First-team All-SEC selection Juice Wells is the leader of the Gamecock receiving corps. Wells has been dealing with injury. Once healthy, Wells and Legette should make for a dynamic duo.
