What Will Muschamp said about South Carolina's defensive problems, first half meltdown in loss at Ole Miss
South Carolina lost its third straight game on Saturday, a 59-42 defeat at Ole Miss that was marked by defensive problems on both sides.
Ole Miss rang up 708 yards of offense, including 513 passing yards for QB Matt Corral, who had four touchdown passes.
South Carolina RB Kevin Harris’ 243 rushing yards on 25 carries for five touchdowns was overshadowed by the points and yards given up by the defense.
Here’s what coach Will Muschamp shared with the media after the game:
Muschamp said his guys competed hard in the game, but he said too many mistakes in the secondary led to the big plays for Ole Miss. #Gamecocks

Muschamp: Said on the Corral knee situation just before half, he said whistle blew, play is dead, and it’s not reviewable. #Gamecocks

Muschamp: Ole Miss is very good offensive team and they’ve done this to a lot of people, but this is concerning, they came in to play zone, and then they couldn’t win in man, they have really good skill people. #Gamecocks

Muschamp says he’s not questioning toughness or effort: “They played their asses off”
— Ben Breiner (@BreinerTheState) November 15, 2020
Muschamp: They wanted to shorten the game as best they could, felt coming in they could have success running ball on this defense. #Gamecocks
— SportsTalk (@sportstalksc) November 15, 2020
Muschamp: Robinson is still calling the defense and they need to evaluate where they are with the defense. #Gamecocks

Muschamp said they just need to be better around the QB. Can’t blame Hill for everything. Trying to build confidence at other spots.

Muschamp on offense and defense “We’ve got to play better team football”
— Ben Breiner (@BreinerTheState) November 15, 2020
Muschamp on the defense “It is concerning. There is no doubt about that.”
Couldn’t win with man or zone.

Muschamp: Got to play better team football, offense did well vs LSU and tonight, defense has struggled last three games, but it’s got to be a team thing, not an individual unit thing. #Gamecocks

Trob defense has allowed 159 points in 3 games, gave up almost 700 yards of offense today he needs to be relieved. He is unqualified I’ve questioned him for at 3 years now, appears to be just like bmac diversity hires. Neither had any businesses beginning coordinators, I can’t believe this is best that’s out there. Fire Tanner Fire Muschump Fire board of trustees.
100% agreement on all your points..
It’s impressive, SC had 300+ yards rushing, 42 points AND STILL loses by 17.
They were running RPOs with a status with broken knees let that sink in.
Muschamp has got to go. The body of evidence is there. He failed at Florida and he has failed at Carolina. Regressing weekly. Take Ray Tanner with you Will.
Texas knew, they were smart. Huge red flag was when they passed on him when Mack Brown left.
Revisionist history? Will left Texas for Florida while Mac Brown was still at Texas.
All I know is Chump is “All Gas No Brakes”. Wait, is that kinda like “Brick by Brick” ? Bring back Sparky Woods!!
No!! Not Sparky. Those were my college years and I’m trying to forget the misery and team revolt happening back then. I think you triggered my PTSD.
Ha, I know but we’re worse now. We look like an average high school Jv team.
SC Defensive Rankings since Muschamp was hired in Dec. 2015:
2016 #6 (This was inherited from Spurrier)
2017 #7 Just a minor slip
2018 #13 Wow!! Some major regression
2019 #11 Better than 2018, but still ridiculously bad
2020 #11 before the Ole Miss game, but likely to drop after that
ridiculous offensive performance by Ole Miss.
Do we need to do this again next year?
Muschamp “they played their asses off” it doesn’t matter champ it still wasn’t good enough and at the end of the night add another one to the loss column. Need to start deducting one million dollars per loss from his buy out.
