After sitting out the first season of the Will Muschamp era during a redshirt season, sophomore athlete Lorenzo Nunez has decided to transfer from the program. Muschamp announced the news Sunday during his Birmingham Bowl press availability.

Nunez began his Gamecock career as a quarterback, starting two games under center in 2015 before redshirting and transitioning to the receiver position in Columbia after Muschamp was hired to replace Steve Spurrier. Upon his arrival to campus, Spurrier praised Nunez as the potential future of the program at quarterback. Nunez was a four-star quarterback prospect in South Carolina’s 2015 recruiting class.

According to his head coach, Nunez’s decision to leave the program is due to his desire to play quarterback, something that clearly wasn’t going to happen with freshmen Jake Bentley and Brandon McIlwain on the SC roster:

At this time, Muschamp did not reveal any information regarding where Nunez could eventually wind up.
