South Carolina showed some improvement offensively in coach Will Muschamp’s eyes, but there’s still work to be done. The Gamecocks got a 24-7 win over Vanderbilt as they pulled away in the middle of the game.

“I thought it was very workmanlike,” Muschamp said. “Offensively, very balanced. We ran the ball well. We threw the ball well at times. We had a red zone turnover and two turnovers on downs, which I think sort of eliminates scoring opportunities for yourself.”

Muschamp didn’t appreciate the penalty difference.

“We had 11 penalties and they had two, that’s kind of interesting,” he said.

In terms of injury updates, Muschamp said RB Tavien Feaster is managing groin injury, WR Josh Vann may have broken hand, WR Shi Smith has a sore hamstring. He expects Smith, RB Rico Dowdle and Dylan Wonnum to play next week.

RB Deshaun Fenwick was a bright spot as he was down the depth chart early in the season, but injuries allowed him to get in the game. He had 18 carries for 102 yards.

“He came to me about transferring,” Muschamp said. “We talked about continuing to work and stuck it out at fourth or fifth on depth chart. He handled the adversity and emerged. Great lesson for him and all of us.”

Muschamp also noted WR Bryan Edward’s school-record 14 receptions in the game.

“He continues to set every record at that position here at the University of South Carolina,” Muschamp said. “You think about some of the greats that have played here. Bryan is certainly in that category. His competitive edge is off the charts, the way he practices, the way he prepares, the way he does everything is awesome.”
