The South Carolina Gamecocks have been without star DL D.J. Wonnum since the season opener against Coastal Carolina, as he went down with an ankle injury.

Coach Will Muschamp spoke about Wonnum on Wednesday evening, giving an updated timetable for the talented defender’s return.

Muschamp did say that Wonnum is so eager to play that he can’t be trusted to tell you how he’s feeling, but added that Wonnum should be ready to go on Sunday (via 247Sports):

“Based on watching him run around a little bit — you can’t trust him. He’ll lie to you and tell you he feels good,” Muschamp said. “I think he’ll be ready to go, hopefully, on Sunday, so that’s a good shot in the arm.”

Wonnum had 57 tackles (13 for a loss) and six sacks last season, so it’s clear he’s an impact player.

The Gamecocks have a bye this weekend and then host Tennessee the following weekend. It sounds like Wonnum could be back in the mix by then.
