South Carolina will have Senior Night festivities this week against Appalachian State as the Gamecocks will honor 25 players, including 18 who were Will Muschamp recruits, and the rest holdovers from the Steve Spurrier era.

Muschamp was proud to share that the football team had a collective GPA above 3.0 for the spring and last fall semesters. Six of the 25 players are currently in graduate school. Eleven have graduated and 11 will graduate in December. Three will graduate in May. Ten are from Muschamp’s first recruiting class.

“(They) have represented themselves, their families and the University of South Carolina in a first-class manner,” Muschamp said at his regular Tuesday press conference.

Five of the players who will walk have eligibility remaining, most notably QB Jake Bentley, who suffered a season-ending foot injury in the opener against North Carolina.

“Extremely disappointed for him, his injury in his senior year and hurt for him and his family,” Muschamp said. “He’s done so much for the University of South Carolina and our football program. Has an opportunity to come back for another year.”

Muschamp noted a lot of the players’ academic accomplishments, including LB Daniel Fennell, who is getting a degree from the Darla Moore School of Business, ranked the top business school in the world, and a degree in Global Supply Chain Management. He did an internship with the company that built the Gamecocks’ operations building and he also traveled to Japan.

The juniors who will participate in Senior Night, “have not made any decisions,” Muschamp said. “We will have those discussions in December when the regular season is over. Certainly wanted them to have their opportunity to walk if they decide not to come back.”
