Jake Bentley is the unquestioned starter at quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks, but the backup quarterback position was up for grabs this summer.

On Saturday, coach Will Muschamp announced who had won that competition, and it appears that experience beat out youth.

Per Muschamp, redshirt senior Michael Scarnecchia earned the backup job, beating out redshirt freshman Jay Urich and true freshman Dakereon Joyner:

Scarnecchia is a fifth-year senior, and he appeared in two games last season without completing (or attempting) a pass.

Whether Scarnecchia holds onto the job all year or not remains to be seen, as Urich and Joyner are both talented young athletes, but for now, it’s Scarnecchia’s gig.
