Will Muschamp shares update on South Carolina QB competition
Will Muschamp told reporters Sunday that he still hasn’t settled on South Carolina’s starting quarterback.
Ryan Hilinski returns after taking over for the injured Jake Bentley in his true freshman season. Former Colorado State quarterback Collin Hill transferred to South Carolina to continue playing for former CSU head coach Mike Bobo, now Muschamp’s offensive coordinator.
“I want to visit with Mike again,” Muschamp told reporters on a Zoom call. “We talked briefly about it today. Really broke up as staff and I’ve been working on Tennessee. I want to get with him tonight or tomorrow and we’ll discuss it further.”
Muschamp said both QB1 contenders did well in Saturday’s scrimmage.
“Both guys did a really nice job,” Muschamp said on the call. “Both guys commanded the offense.”
Muschamp said the staff may look at Tuesday’s practice before naming a starter. One would expect South Carolina’s starting quarterback to be named before game-week prep. The Gamecocks host Tennessee on Sept. 26. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on the SEC Network.
Last season, South Carolina fell 41-21 at Tennessee. Hilinski went 28-of-51 passing for 319 yards and a touchdown.
