South Carolina’s offense will be a bit short-handed in the backfield this week at Tennessee as coach Will Muschamp revealed that RB Rico Dowdle is likely out this week.

Dowdle suffered a sprained knee and had ice on it early in last week’s game against Florida. He “moved around” some during Tuesday’s practice, but it was unclear how much he’s limited by the injury.

Dowdle had been South Carolina’s leading rusher before a big game by Tavien Feaster as he shouldered the bulk of the rushing last week and had 175 rushing yards on 25 carries with a touchdown last week. Dowdle had just one carry for 8 yards.

“Very relieved that he won’t have to have surgery, and hopefully we’ll get him back sooner than later,” Muschamp said at his regular Tuesday press conference.

This was Dowdle’s best start to the season in his career as he’s struggled with a host of injuries his entire career. But he had two 102-yard games earlier this season against Alabama and Kentucky. He’s averaged over 4 yards per carry in 4 games this season.

Dowdle suffered an ankle injury against Kentucky, but with a week off before Georgia was able to heal in time with limited practices.

Feaster and Mon Denson are expected to get the bulk of the carries this week at Tennessee.
