One of Will Muschamp’s top priorities as South Carolina’s new coach is to address the overall lack of talent on the roster.

Adding to that difficulty is the fact that Pharoh Cooper, the Gamecocks’ best offensive player, has declared for the NFL Draft. Skai Moore, the team’s best defensive player, is expected to do the same.

Muschamp and his newly appointed assistant coaches have been hard at work on the recruiting trail in an effort to salvage the 2016 recruiting class, but there are a few players already in Columbia that can help the new coach reverse the team’s fortunes in 2016.

Here are the five best returning players for the Gamecocks:

5. Perry Orth — A former walk-on, Orth was fifth on the preseason depth chart at quarterback in 2014. He was in a dead heat for second behind Connor Mitch at the start of this season and, by the time the season played out, he was the last man standing.

He threw for 1,929 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions on the season. While those numbers aren’t spectacular, Orth was at least able to play in every game, which is more than Mitch or the next guy on this list can say. He may not be the starter in 2016, but it’s always nice to have experience at the position.

4. Lorenzo Nunez — A four-star recruit out of Kennesaw, Georgia, Nunez had his growth curve accelerated a bit as a true freshman when Mitch went down in Week 2. He saw spot duty against Georgia then made a start against UCF, in which he tallied 306 yards of total offense and a couple of scores.

An injured shoulder derailed his season as well, which ended with him throwing for 376 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. He did, however, finish as the team’s second-leading rusher, averaging 6.4 yards per carry on his way to 375 yards. He’ll compete for the job next season, but will have to impress new coordinator Kurt Roper.

3. David Williams — Williams began the season in a timeshare with Brandon Wilds, but was outplayed by both Wilds and Shon Carson at the running back position. Still, the rising junior was the team’s third-leading rusher with 299 yards and snagged 11 passes out of the backfield.

It’s likely that the Class of 2016 will include some competition for him, but Williams is the early favorite to start at running back for South Carolina next season.

2. Marquavius Lewis — The highly touted junior college recruit got off to a slow start as he adjusted to life in the SEC, but picked up the pace as the season progressed. Lewis led the defensive line in tackles with 45 and was second in sacks with three.

His return, along with Darius English and Boosie Whitlow, should make the pass rush a bit better for new defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson next season.

1. T.J. Holloman — After not recording a tackle in the first two games, he moved into the lineup at middle linebacker, sliding Moore to the weak side. From there, he had 63 tackles and two interceptions.

Replacing Moore’s production will be a tall order, but having Holloman back to anchor the middle will help immensely.
