3 takeaways from Florida State's loss to Mike Norvell's old team, Memphis
Technically, it’s an upset. Memphis came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 24 in this week’s coaches poll while Florida State, despite being Florida State and being at home, was winless and struggling.
Even with an extra week off to prepare, the Seminoles’ struggles continued.
The same issues that led to stunning early season losses to ACC rivals Georgia Tech and Boston College continued to plague the defending ACC champions on Saturday. Turnovers, penalties and an inability to sustain and finish drives added up to a 20-12 loss to coach Mike Norvell’s former team.
Now 0-3 with the toughest part of its schedule still to come, FSU has gone from the preseason ACC favorite and a College Football Playoff contender to a team that might have to struggle just to become bowl eligible.
Here are 3 takeaways from the Seminoles’ latest disappointment.
Seminoles continue to be their own worst enemy
When you start the season with 2 straight losses and have trouble moving the ball, the last thing you want to do is help the opposition out. But that’s what FSU did again on Saturday. The self-inflicted wounds started early when Roydell Williams fumbled the ball away on the game’s 2nd play. Memphis turned that turnover into a field goal.
A late 1st-quarter interception of DJ Uiagaleli turned into a touchdown that extended the Tigers’ lead to 10-0. Then, just as it appeared as though FSU had finally shifted the momentum into its favor by getting a Ryan Fitzgerald and a defensive stop at the 2-minute timeout, disaster struck again.
This time it came in the form of a muffed punt that not only cost the Seminoles an opportunity to put more points on the board, but also helped Memphis tack 3 more points on before halftime. The Tigers extended their lead with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to start the 2nd half that was aided greatly by a defensive breakdown that allowed a 31-yard completion on 3rd-and-5, and a roughing the passer penalty that gave the Tigers a 1st down in the red zone.
Offensive line and running game are still a problem
Adam Fuller’s defense made some clear strides during last week’s open date, holding Memphis to only 61 yards on the ground and keeping the game within reach while its offense struggled in the 1st half.
But about that offense.
Although DJU finally found a rhythm and looked much better throwing the ball over the final 2 periods, FSU’s offensive line and running game were still as much a problem as they were in the season-opening losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College
The line situation wasn’t helped by the absence of preseason All-ACC tackle Darius Washington and fellow starting tackle Jeremiah Byers. With Robert Scott and Jaylen Early filling the gaps, the Seminoles had trouble both opening holes for their backs and protecting the quarterback.
FSU finished with only 37 rushing yards on 24 carries for an average of 1.5 yards per attempt. The Tigers also recorded 12 tackles for loss and 4 sacks, while they made life even more difficult for DJU with 5 quarterback hurries.
DJU on the run isn’t a bad thing
It took 2.5 games to figure it out, but it seems as though FSU may finally have found the secret to get the best out of their transfer quarterback. Keep him on the run. No, not on the run when there’s a defensive player chasing him. But rather by rolling him out and finding ways to get him more time to find receivers beyond line of scrimmage.
After going 7-of-14 for just 31 yards, an interception and no touchdowns in the 1st half, DJU was much more effective when they began moving him around the pocket more after halftime. His 1st pass was his biggest play of the young season so far – a 67-yard strike to Malik Benson that led to an FSU touchdown.
DJU completed his 1st 7 attempts of the half and led his team to a field goal on the next possession. He ended the game 16-of-30 for 201 yards against the Tigers.
As great as it is to see clown u 0-3 I am stills so shocked. How they are this bad when they were looked at as a play off team is insane. That last game in Tallahassee is deff looking more winnable for the gators.
If they keep folding like this yall definitely have a shot, I think the Noles are going to start early checkout
FSU’s complete implosion makes our season feel a little less hurtful. At least we have one win and we were expected to suck.
Man I thought the noles were bad until I tuned on the gator game .. geez …
Yikes, FSU is in a full speed nosedive
You guys stole their soul
I can see why they want to leave their conference. The ACC is too good for them.
There is no way Norvell makes it through the season without getting fired.
Still haven’t recovered from the Orange Bowl.
UGA players still haven’t recovered from being drunk.
Loving this! lol
This wasn’t in my preseason bingo card.
Looking more winnable for the Gators? Not really.
