Drew Brees has joined the Purdue staff as an interim assistant for the Citrus Bowl game against LSU, the Boilermakers announced Thursday.

“I am extremely excited to work with our team over the next few weeks as we prepare for the Citrus Bowl,” Brees said in a statement. “I see it not only as an opportunity to coach and mentor this group of young men, but represent all the former Purdue players that care so much about our program.”

Under NCAA guidelines, Brees is allowed to work with student-athletes as well as participate in recruiting activities.

Brees played college football at Purdue from 1997 to 2000, leading the Boilermakers to their second-ever Rose Bowl to cap off the 2000 season.

The former New Orleans signal-caller was named an Academic All-American as a senior and was 2000’s Maxwell Award winner for the nation’s most outstanding player.
