Florida State’s beyond-disappointing season may not have fully hit its rock bottom yet, but it’s getting there.
With a 52-3 loss to rivals Notre Dame in a game where the Seminoles were rarely competitive Saturday, Mike Norvell’s team accomplished something no team has ever done before. Normally, that is a good thing for a program.
Not on this occasion:
As expected, Florida State is being ambushed by Notre Dame.
Not expected, the Noles are now 1-9…and in the process make history.
FSU becomes the first team EVER to be ranked in the AP preseason Top 10 to start 1-9.
The poll began in 1936.

That’s 88 years of the AP Poll being in existence with a team having never accomplished this feat.
And sure, 3 of those 9 losses have been by a single score, so FSU fans can make the argument that they could be a lot closer to bowl eligibility if the ball bounces their way a couple more times.
But on the flip side of that, 4 of the other 6 losses have come by at least 22 points, including 3-straight blowout defeats over the past couple of weeks.
If you’re wondering about the likelihood that FSU falls to an unimaginable 1-11 this season, it likely won’t happen. Even with the struggles and roster deficiencies, the Seminoles should be able to take down the FCS’ Charleston Southern after their bye week.
And then, a home date with a similarly desperate Florida squad awaits. The losing coach of that game will sit on one of the hottest seats in the nation over the offseason, while the winner can at least claim that they aren’t the worst FBS team in the state of Florida this season.
