Miami suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon against Georgia Tech, 28-23.

After starting the season 9-0, the Hurricanes fell behind early against Georgia Tech and never recovered. The Yellow Jackets took a 14-10 lead in the second quarter and never trailed again.

Miami had a chance in the final 2 minutes to go on a potential game-winning touchdown drive, but Cam Ward fumbled the ball after getting sacked for the third time in this game.

The Yellow Jackets took over possession with just over 90 seconds remaining in the game. Because of a botched timeout from head coach Mario Cristobal at the 2-minute warning, Miami was only able to stop the clock twice.

It’s a devastating loss for Miami, who now has very little margin-for-error for the rest of the season if it wants to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Hurricanes still have a path to the ACC Championship Game, but they will likely need to win out for the rest of the month in order to get there.

Georgia Tech has now secured back-to-back wins over Miami.

The Canes were ranked No. 4 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, which were revealed earlier this week. Miami will have to wait until Tuesday evening to see how far it falls in the updated College Football Playoff rankings.
