Is it time for Oklahoma State to move on from Mike Gundy?

SEC Network host Paul Finebaum certainly seems to think so after star Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard reacted harshly to a photo of Gundy in an OAN (which stands for “One America News Network”) t-shirt.

After seeing the photo of Gundy supporting OAN, Hubbard — the nation’s leading returning rusher — threatened to sit out until further notice. Hubbard’s comment was soon followed by several current and former Oklahoma State players voicing their support of the running back.

None of the responses from the players issued support for Gundy.

The situation was handled quickly by Oklahoma State by issuing the video seen below, but that may not be enough according to Finebaum. During his most recent appearance on ESPN morning show “Get Up,” the SEC Network host was asked to share his reaction to the drama in Stillwater.

“I thought the wrong person apologized,” Finebaum said on the show. “Chuba was just expressing his frustration with his head coach in the middle of a major national and international crisis wearing a t-shirt of a network that I must admit, I’ve never seen but I’ve read enough about, and a commentator on that network recently said that ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a farce.

“So I can understand the frustration of players. What I can’t understand is why Mike Gundy has been allowed to continue to coach at Oklahoma State. This is not his first rodeo. This is not the first time he has embarrassed, if not humiliated, that university and I think the sooner that Oklahoma State gets rid of Mike Gundy, the better it’s going to be for that school and especially the players who go out there every Saturday and give their blood sweat and tears for that university.”

After that scorching take, Finebaum was asked to further delve into why he believes Oklahoma State should move on from Gundy.

“Because I have watched Mike Gundy over the years,” Finebaum continued. “I mean, the only meaningful thing he has contributed to Oklahoma State during his tenure there of 15 years is doing the, ‘I’m 40 and I’m a man’ video a couple years ago… that went viral. Other than that, he has not been that great of a coach.

“He’s 2-13 against the University of Oklahoma. Try going 2-13 against your rival and continuing as a head coach. But that’s not really the issue here, the issue is his insensitivity. He humiliated the school two months ago when he laughed off COVID-19, basically said let’s bring the players back there’s too much money at stake here, and he has not changed that at all. He continues to embarrass this school every time he opens his mouth.”

Finebaum clearly didn’t hold back on this one.
