Mike Norvell identifies X-factor in loss to Georgia Tech
Mike Norvell’s Florida State Seminoles suffered a tough defeat in Week 0, falling to an unranked Georgia Tech team.
The Seminoles were often bullied at the line of scrimmage, and the Yellow Jackets were able to accumulate 190 rushing yards en route to a 24-21 victory. Georgia Tech running back Jamal Haynes had 75 rushing yards and found the end zone twice. Quarterback Haynes King added 54 rushing yards of his own.
After the game, Norvell spoke on what went wrong for his team in the disappointing opener. Norvell praised the GT runners for being able to get to the edge and said his team “has to do a better job setting the edge. He called that the X-factor in the game.
“There are some times that we were in position, but he (King) did a good job to get to the edge,” Norvell said, per Tomahawk Nation’s Jordan Silversmith. “We’ve got to do a better job setting the edge. That was definitely the X-factor in this game.”
Those watching the game were surely surprised by the Seminoles’ lack of physicality. The once-stout defense was gashed in the running game all day. Georgia Tech only had 3 plays stopped behind the line of scrimmage for a loss, and averaged 5.3 yards per run.
On the other side, FSU averaged just 3.2 yards per carry and had 7 plays stuffed behind the line of scrimmage.
However, Norvell was hesitant to blame the disappointing performance on a lack of physicality at the line of scrimmage.
“I’ve got to see the film,” Norvell said, per Silversmith. “I didn’t think it was a lack of physicality. Up front, there are times that, offensively, we have to do a better job maintaining leverage. … They did a good job changing up our schemes. We had our chances.”
Speaking of chances, the Noles went just 5 of 12 on third-down conversion opportunities. The Noles will look to right the ship in Week 1 against Boston College.
Mike, The X factor was that you took the field and the Free Shoes with crab legs team were coached by you.Should have stayed at Memphis.
