The NBA playoffs are well underway with the second round of matchups poised to begin on Saturday, June 6, 2021. Seven of the eight first-round series are complete with the winners advancing to the second round. The only remaining first round series is LA Clippers vs. Dallas Mavericks with a series tied at 3-3. Game 7 of that series will be on Sunday.

Perhaps the most surprising result is that the last year’s champion, the LA Lakers are out after losing to Phoenix 4-2 in the first round. Injuries have plagued the Lakers season and this continued with Anthony Davis not being 100% to battle the Suns. Meanwhile, led by the steady hand of veteran Chris Paul, Devin Booker took a leap into super stardom with incredible performances throughout the series. Add in solid play by guys like Deandre Ayton and the Suns all of a sudden look like a team poised to go deep in the western conference playoffs.

NBA Playoffs: Where we stand

  • With the Lakers going down, the West is wide open. We could easily see any of the remaining teams make the finals. This means Utah, Denver, Phoenix, Dallas and the Clippers might have their best opportunity to win the west in years.
  • With Lebron James out of the playoffs, the power three teams in the east are salivating at their opportunity to win a title. Brooklyn, Philadelphia and Milwaukee are all looking outstanding and have finals aspirations. But they will have to get by each other on their way there. That begins in the 2nd round as Brooklyn and Milwaukee square off. This will be a fun series.
  • With the only series going deep, the Clippers and Mavs play game 7 tomorrow. Can veterans Kahwi Leonard and Paul George hold off the new upstart led by Luka? The series can go either way. The winner will play Utah in the second round.
