Elijah Robinson jokes he's had to keep phone on charger since receiving interim tag
Elijah Robinson has been a busy man since his promotion to interim head coach on Sunday.
The defensive line coach-turned-head coach took over after Jimbo Fisher was fired Sunday morning. Since then, his phone has been blowing up as Robinson’s former colleagues, coaches and friends have reached out to him.
One of the people who reached out to Robinson was Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule, who Robinson worked under at Temple as a defensive line coach.
“I’ve had to keep my phone on the charger, it’s been going off a lot lately,” Robinson said during the SEC coaches teleconference. “Coach Rhule’s always been a great mentor of mine. As a young coach, he gave me an opportunity once I left the nest of my alma mater. We’ve stayed in contact over the years, not just coached with him, but since I left Temple and left Baylor, he’s stayed in contact. Dear friend of mine and a great leader, a great mentor and he’s another person I’ve admired because of the relationship he’s had when it comes to players and young men.”
Robinson has also heard from some of his former players, from those he coached at Texas A&M to some that he coached over a decade ago at Penn State.
“Talked to a bunch of former players, obviously from here from Texas A&M, from Penn State, Temple University, and also from Baylor,” Robinson said. “So a lot of support from former players and former coaches and as I mentioned before, relationships I still have with my Little League coaches from high school. Heard from everybody and so I appreciate the support and also the people around here in town and the athletic department, just giving me their support and reaching out and letting me know they were here for me if I needed them.”
Now Robinson is looking to use that support as motivation as he leads Texas A&M through its final 2 games of the season and an eventual bowl game. This week, the Aggies take on Abeline Christian before closing out the season against LSU.
