There is a theme across Texas this season. Several of the college football teams there are having trouble in big games. The Longhorns lost last week to TCU, and Texas A&M fell at Alabama.

For the Aggies, it’s been a trend over the last few years, from their games against Clemson, to a host of SEC West rivals. ESPN’s Rece Davis recently shared some thoughts on this subject with Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun on the Dooley Noted podcast.

“To me, if A&M could ever break through and win one of those games, they’ve been close a few times,” Davis said. “A couple years ago they gave Alabama a pretty good run in College Station for a while, kind of a rally type game. I called the game two years ago when they had a great opportunity to beat Clemson and they didn’t, it’s almost as if it’s some type of block with them that they can’t quite get over the hump in the big game. They don’t quite make the play.”

As Fisher has said and Davis appeared to agree with, Texas A&M has closed some of the gap with Alabama, but it still remains.

“They did some decent things against Alabama (last week) at times, they didn’t let them run, Jimbo drew up some pretty good stuff, they had some great matchups and get their running back out of the backfield wide open for a lot of big plays,” Davis said. “But they just don’t finish the deal, they just don’t make enough big plays, they don’t make the winning plays. I know that’s a nebulous thing but a lot of times that separates a team from being pretty good and being a contender. That’s what’s missing with them.”
