I’d say a few people saw this one coming.

Former Texas A&M WR Ricky Seals-Jones is switching to TE in hopes of making the Arizona Cardinals’ roster. He signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent.

After being an elite high school prospect, Seals-Jones never became a huge weapon for the Aggies’ offense. He recorded just 26 catches for 333 yards and one touchdown as a junior before leaving early for the NFL. No doubt the body and athleticism are there, but things just never clicked. Seals-Jones is hoping the position change helps him make the roster and helps him stay in the league. It also sounds like this is a move he saw coming.

“Once I left A&M and started training, I kind of took that route of putting a little bit more weight on, learning how to block and running routes with the hand in the dirt,” said Seals-Jones. “Once the process started going and talking to a lot of teams, they were like, ‘How do you feel about tight end?’ I kind of knew from there I needed to start working on that, so when I came in it wasn’t brand new.”

It could turn out to be a great move, because only seven-year veteran Jermaine Gresham has any real production at the position for the Cardinals.

“My biggest thing is learning the footwork technique of being on the line of scrimmage,” Seals-Jones said. “At A&M, you’d just give them a two-way go for the running back. Here, you may have to step in and seal (the defender on a running play), might have to wash them down. Doing footwork technique, that will make me a lot better.”

The 6-foot-5, 247-pound pass catcher could make a smooth transition at the position, and it could be the change he needs to help him reach his potential.
