Jimbo Fisher may be the first head coach Texas A&M has hired that has won a national title leading another program but he isn’t the first splashy hire made by the Aggies in the hopes of bringing a national title to College Station.

Dennis Franchione failed to deliver that prize for A&M, going only 32-28 in his five seasons in College Station from 2003 to 2007 after going 17-8 in Tuscaloosa and coming off a 10-3 final season with Alabama back in 2002. While Franchione failed to reach the lofty goals set by his hire, the former Aggie coach believes Fisher can deliver where he could not.

Franchione recently gave an interview to KBTX-TV (College Station) and offered up these comments when asked if Fisher could win a national title for Texas A&M.

“He knows the steps along the way and I don’t think there is any doubt that he is as qualified to do it as anybody that they could have hired,” said Franchione. “There is no doubt in his tenure it could happen and I know the Aggies believe in him and believe it can happen and they should and Jimbo should, too.”

During his five seasons in College Station, Franchione’s best season came in 2006 when the Aggies went 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12. That record was good for only a third-place finish in the Big 12 South, which tied for the highest mark Franchione achieved in College Station.
