Greg McElroy evaluates Mike Elko's hire at Texas A&M
Greg McElroy gave his thoughts on Texas A&M’s hiring of Mike Elko on Tuesday on Always College Football.
Elko was hired Sunday after a somewhat chaotic weekend in College Station that saw Mark Stoops emerging as the top candidate late Saturday night. Ultimately, McElroy thinks Elko is a good hire for Texas A&M.
“I do think that Elko is a really solid candidate,” McElroy said. “If he can win 9 games at Duke, that’s saying something. But it’s more about how he ran the program than anything else. They’re gonna have great defense, they’re gonna be well structured and Mike Elko is a thoughtful and cerebral coach. The chaos that Texas A&M has experienced at times, I think that will go away.”
McElroy believes that Elko will bring stability to Texas A&M, which is something the Aggies have lacked. He also thinks that the concern that Elko won’t be able to recruit at the highest level will matter that much.
“I really like the hire, partly because I think structure is necessary,” McElroy said. “One thing we don’t know is will Elko be able to recruit at the highest level. Well, do you need to when you have an NIL war chest that Texas A&M has. I’m not sure it’s gonna matter.”
