Former Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel will go down as one of the most polarizing players in SEC history for his talent on the field and his antics off of it, but the NFL game has seen all of the bad and none of the good so far.

Manziel washed out of the league after only eight starts over two years with the Cleveland Browns, but former teammate Travis Benjamin says that the Heisman Trophy winner is poised for a comeback.

“I saw Johnny about a month ago through this PT guy we go to in San Diego and he’s looking good,” Benjamin said during an NFL Network interview on Thursday. “He says he’s ready to come back and hopefully he’ll get a shot at a team and he’ll go in, continue to humble himself and play smart and play good.”

When asked, Benjamin said Manziel’s determination has changed.

“You gonna have a guy that’s going to come in ready to prove himself,” Benjamin said. “Ready to get his second chance at what he does best and hopefully it’ll be a good outcome.”

For Manziel, the explosive, creative, backyard style plays that he became famous for in college have yet to be seen in the NFL, as professional defenses keyed in on his laissez-faire playmaking.

The concerns were more off-the-field than on, however, as a domestic violence charge and other not-so-admirable accusations followed him around like a cloud that hindered his young career from ever getting off the ground. Manziel’s work ethic and study habits were also called into question, as photos of his legendary partying ways popped up all over Instagram.

If Benjamin’s statement is accurate and the young signal-caller does want to make a comeback, the key will surely be more mental than physical.
