Kyle Allen was given an opportunity to show what he could do on the field last season and while he didn’t perform well enough to help Ron Rivera stay in Carolina, he obviously did enough to impress his former head coach.

That goes without saying as Rivera’s new team in Washington has sent a fifth-round selection to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for the quarterback. News of the trade was first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.

After Cam Newton went down with an injury last season in Carolina, Allen stepped up and started 12 games for the Panthers. The former Texas A&M quarterback, Allen was in College Station between 2014 and 2015 before transferring out, completed 62 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards with 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions last season in Carolina.

While his performance started to tail off later in the season, in his first start for the Panthers, Allen completed 73 percent of his passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions against the Arizona Cardinals.

Carolina’s decision to move on from Allen comes after the club signed Teddy Bridgewater in free agency and are reportedly set to add former XFL quarterback P.J. Walker.

Now Allen will have another opportunity to play for Rivera in Washington and may have the opportunity to compete for the starting role as rookie Dwayne Haskins only threw for 1,365 yards with seven touchdowns and as many interceptions in his NFL debut.
