Jake Spavital has made it clear who he hopes will be his quarterback for the rest of the season. In his Tuesday press conference, Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator expressed confidence in his freshman quarterback, saying that he would retain the starting job when Kenny Hill returns from suspension, assuming he continues to improve.

Allen beat out Hill for the starting nod last week, which was followed by Hill earning a two-game suspension for a violation of team and university rules. While Allen was shaky in his starting debut, going 13-for-28 passing for 106 yards, a touchdown and an interception. While Spavital made it clear there was room for improvement in Allen’s performance, he said he thought the freshman communicated well on the field.

While the door is still open for Hill to earn back his starting role, Spavital’s statements make it sound as if the coaching staff wants Allen to retain the role for the rest of the season. Before his suspension Hill was (and still is) the leading passer in the SEC, with 2,649 yards and 23 TD.
