Mike Elko has filled out his Texas A&M coaching staff by bringing Jordan Peterson back to Aggieland. Texas A&M announced Monday that Peterson will be the Aggies’ defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator.

It was reported on Dec. 31 that Wesley McGriff would be making the move from Auburn to Texas A&M. By Jan. 12, however, it was reported that McGriff had changed his mind.

Peterson played at Texas A&M for four seasons (2006-09), lettering three years. He recorded 81 tackles, 15 pass breakups and 4 interceptions. After his playing career, he got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant with the Aggies for the 2010 and ’11 seasons.

Peterson was most recently on staff at Kansas for four seasons as defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator. He coached four All-Big 12 selections during his time at KU, including Cobee Bryant, the second player in program history to be named first-team all-conference twice. Bryant and Mello Dotson recorded 7 interceptions in 2023, the most by a Kansas DB duo since 2007.

Prior to Kansas, Peterson was at New Mexico. He coached safeties for three seasons and was promoted to defensive coordinator ahead of the 2019 season. Peterson’s first on-field position came at Fresno State. He spent five seasons with the Bulldogs (2012-16), working with the secondary and outside linebackers and coaching special teams.
