Mike Elko met with reporters on Saturday night after Texas A&M’s disappointing loss to Notre Dame.

Amongst the topics covered was the performance of quarterback Conner Weigman. Weigman threw for just 100 yards on 12-of-30 attempts and also threw a pair of interceptions on the night.

It was a stunning performance from a quarterback that entered the year with expectations to be amongst the SEC’s best in 2024 after recovering from an injury that cost him most of the 2023 campaign.

Elko told reporters after the game that they were never able to get Weigman into a rhythm. Finding areas where he’s comfortable will be a focus off the coaching staff this week as the Aggies prepare to face McNeese State in Week 2.

“We got to go back to the tape and find out how to put him in better situations to get him comfortable,” Elko said. “He was not in rhythm, and there was nothing easy. We kept trying. Just couldn’t get there.”

Texas A&M does have another option at quarterback in Jaylen Henderson if it deems it necessary to try someone else under center in the coming weeks. Henderson played well in limited snaps last season and led the Aggies to wins over Mississippi State and Abilene Christian.

Texas A&M does get a bit of a reprieve in Week 2 with McNeese State coming to College Station, but the Aggies will face Florida to kick off SEC play in Week 3 in Gainesville.
