Newy Scruggs, a sports anchor at NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and radio host, answered several live questions during a chat with the Dallas News, and one answer was particularly interesting.

Scruggs said he could see TCU’s Gary Patterson leaving for the Texas A&M job. Of course, all of this is hypothetical should Kevin Sumlin somehow not return in 2018, but there’s no doubt his athletic director, Scott Woodward, started all of the talk with his comments during the spring meeting.

Here’s what Scruggs said Wednesday:

Question: Is there any job that could lure Gary Patterson away from TCU?

Scruggs: If Texas A&M were to open up and they gave Gary Patterson an offer … Hmmm.

Patterson is a defensive guy and when is the last time “The Wrecking Crew” was “The Wrecking Crew?”

Patterson is one of the best coaches in America, and if there was a job I could see him leaving the Frogs for, it would be A&M. Now, if he would ask me if he should go, I would tell Gary to stay at TCU, where he is the all-time winningest head coach, and get his 20 years in.

Patterson has been the head coach at TCU since 2000, with his first full season in 2001. He’s a combined 149-54 during that time, and he’s a fantastic coach, including the program’s all-time winningest head coach.

But would he really leave TCU, a place where seems happy and has been successful?

No doubt the Texas A&M job would be attractive to several head coaches.

All of this mostly centers around Kevin Sumlin’s alarming 7-9 record in November the last four years. His teams continue to start very strong but continually fall flat at the end of the season.
