As the NFL preseason gets underway, teams need healthy players to fill out their rosters for the four exhibition games.

Unfortunately for former Texas A&M OL Mike Matthews, that has led to him getting cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Pro Football Talk, Matthews has been sitting out with an injury and, needing a roster spot for a center ahead of Thursday’s preseason opener, the Steelers cut him in order to sign center Lucas Crowley.

Maurkice Pouncey is the entrenched starter in Pittsburgh, so Matthews was only going to be a backup at best, but now he’ll look for a new NFL home.

At the very least, at least he has a full month to go before the season starts, so he’ll likely get a chance to join another team’s training camp to prove he belongs on an NFL roster this fall.
