Putting a disappointing loss to Clemson in the rear view mirror, Texas A&M returned to Kyle Field on Saturday to throttle Lamar 62-3.

It was a nice tuneup for next Saturday when the Aggies open SEC play against Auburn at 3:30 p.m. ET in Kyle Field.

Methodically dismantling an out manned Cardinals team, the Aggies weren’t particularly sharp but used a decided advantage in talent level to turn away their Southland Conference foe. A&M didn’t punt until the fourth quarter with the game long since decided.

Aggies quarterback Kellen Mond threw for 317 yards and a touchdown. He also tossed up an interception in his three quarters of work. His final pass of the night went for a 10-yard touchdown to Jhamon Ausbon that increased the lead to 41-3.

True freshman Zach Calzada saw his first action at the college level, throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Wydermyer on his first pass attempt and the Aggies took a 48-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

Texas A&M put the game away early, scoring on all five first-half drives before taking a knee to end the half. And though the Aggies were never threatened, the Cardinals frustrated their hosts in two of those initial possessions. Reaching the red zone all five times, the Aggies bogged down twice and had to settle for field goals of 21 and 31 yards from Seth Small.

But Texas A&M completed touchdown drives of 68 yards in 7 plays and 75 yards in 9 plays to take a 20-0 lead. With starting running back Jashaun Corbin out for the season with a hamstring injury, the Aggies relied on the running back duo of Jacob Kibodi and Isaiah Spiller with positive results. Both found the end zone with short touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yard, respectively.

Mond, who threw for 202 yards in the first half, completed the fifth drive with a 12-yard touchdown run and the lead grew to 27-0 with time winding down in the first half. They added to that in the third quarter when Spiller broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run and a 34-0 lead. Spiller recorded his first 100-yard rushing game.

The Aggies defense had its moments early as well. Bobby Brown blocked Lamar’s field goal attempt early in the second quarter, keeping scoreless a Cardinals team that drove 80 yards in 7 plays. The Cardinals did manage a third-quarter field goal to get on the scoreboard. But it was much too little too late.
