Rece Davis speculated on some of Mike Elko’s postgame comments from over the weekend during the latest episode of the College GameDay podcast.

Elko had some rather pointed remarks after Texas A&M’s comeback victory. Here’s what he had to say:

“This is a real program,” Elko said. “It’s not fake. It’s not a politician running this program, talking fast and BSing everybody. This is a real program. And for all the recruits out there, this is a real place. And if you want to be really good at football, this is a really good place to be.”

On Monday, Elko tried to clear the air about his comments as some thought he was taking a jab at former Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher. Elko claimed his comments weren’t directed at any particular coach — and certainly not Fisher, who hired him to be A&M’s defensive coordinator once upon a time.

However, that didn’t stop Davis from guessing who Elko may have been talking about in that moment at the podium. Davis speculated that he may have been taking a jab at Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

“The low-key target could have also been Steve Sarkisian because now you’re back in the conference with Texas,” Davis said. “You’re always fighting against Texas. And I don’t know that Sark fits the mold of what he said. But for all of these 100 years that we’ve been talking about A&M football, everything is, in some way, shape, form, or fashion, aimed at Texas. Texas A&M left the Big 12 to go to the SEC because of Texas. They didn’t want Texas to come in because they don’t like Texas. So that’s a possibility, too.”

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Elko made those remarks to get the attention of a trio of 4-star prospects in the class of 2026. All 3 players mentioned by Thamel — Jordan Carter, Aaron Gregory and Samu Moala — ended up committing to Texas A&M earlier this week.

After the big win over LSU and a significant week on the recruiting trail, the Aggies will now turn their attention to the South Carolina game this weekend as they hope to remain undefeated in SEC play.
