I may get a fight from Auburn, and possibly a couple of others, but there’s no denying that Texas A&M has one of the best – if not the best – 1-2 punches at running back. The potent tandem of junior Isaiah Spiller and sophomore Devon Achane gives defenses absolutely no breather whatsoever.

That was certainly evident in the Aggies’ 41-10 victory Saturday over visiting Kent State. Both rushed for more than 100 yards, combining for 237 of the team’s 303 rushing yards. It was the first time since the Nov. 16, 2019 victory over South Carolina that the Aggies had a pair of 100-yard rushers.

For Spiller, who rushed for 113 yards on 17 carries, it was his 11th career 100-yard game. He also became the 21st player in program history to run for more than 2,000 yards in his career. Spiller ranks 18th all-time at Texas A&M with 2,095 yards.

He’s the leader in the backfield, helping the Aggies to their 9th consecutive victory, which ties the second-longest active win streak in the country and most consecutive wins for Texas A&M since the 1998 season when they won 10 in a row.

And all Achane did was average 10.33 yards per carry (12-for-124) and score 2 touchdowns, one using his blazing speed for a 63-yard scoring dash that left the Golden Flashes in his dust. He also ripped off a 30-yard run that set up another score. As I said, no breather when Achane is in the game.

It was his second consecutive 2-touchdown effort. He scored twice in last season’s Orange Bowl victory over North Carolina.

The duo is as imposing as it gets. The only real question is for head coach Jimbo Fisher in how to share the football between the two. Spiller is more seasoned, but both are outstanding if not spectacular with the football in their hand.

“(Spiller) and Achane are going to touch the ball plenty, I promise you, because they can catch it,” Fisher said. “They can run it. I’m going to tell you what. They’re both selfless. Ainias (Smith) is, too. When he’s back there running, all three of those guys block, run, catch really good.”

Spiller is the starter, not only because of what he can do on the field, but also because of what he brings to the program off the field as well.

“His leadership, he’s really emerged into a leader and how he practices and affects guys in a great way, not just his performance,” Fisher said. “It’s amazing. You know why he did it so well? He did it all camp. He’s been amazing in camp, as good as anybody we’ve got on our team this whole camp. Spiller’s been awesome.

“His whole demeanor since spring ball has been unbelievable, as good as anybody on our team. I don’t mean any disrespect to anybody else. He’s been outstanding, as a lot of those guys have. But he’s been tremendous. Happy for him.“

The best part is there doesn’t seem to be any animosity between the two over who should get the touches. Spiller carried 17 times Saturday while Achane toted it 12 times.

“It’s just our job, doing our job every day, me and Von,” Spiller said. “I’m happy to see him get his over 100. So can’t wait for next week.”

The Aggies travel to Denver’s Mile High Stadium to take on Colorado for a 2:30 p.m. game against their former Big 12 foe.

What’s scary for the Buffaloes and all opposition on the remainder of the Aggies’ schedule is that Spiller believes the duo, and the offense as a whole, is only going to get better as a revamped offensive line continues to jell.

“Very explosive,” Spiller said in describing the Aggies’ offense moving forward. “We’re going to be a very explosive offense. We can do it all. We’ve got tight ends. We’ve got multiple running backs, multiple receivers that can run down the field, run past you, catch the ball.”

If that is, indeed, the case, then by season’s end there should be no argument as to which program has the best running back duo in the country.
