Steve Spurrier weighs in on Jimbo Fisher's firing
Steve Spurrier chimed in on Texas A&M firing Jimbo Fisher on Sunday.
Fisher was fired after being at the helm of the Aggies’ program since 2018. On the “Another Dooley Noted Podcast,” host Pat Dooley joked about the Aggies making a plaque for when Fisher wins the program a national title.
“(Texas A&M) gave him such a long-term deal. But they had some boosters who didn’t care how much they spent,” Spurrier said on Dooley’s podcast.
Texas A&M currently has a 6-4 record this season, but has lost 3 of its last 5 games.
“He’s a good coach,” Spurrier said. “He had (Bobby) Petrino running the offense, their defense is sound. It wasn’t like (the Aggies) are terrible.”
The Aggies were 45-25 during Fisher’s tenure, including a 27-21 mark in the SEC. Fisher also led the Aggies to 4 bowl games.
Spurrier noted a fact in football is that “everybody can’t win,” including in the SEC. He added that college football is becoming like pro football “in a lot of ways.”
“The fans want to see those close games,” Spurrier said.
Texas A&M hosts Abilene Christian at noon Saturday on the SEC Network.
