Conner Weigman may be the man of the hour, but Texas A&M has 2 capable quarterbacks on its roster.

Weigman is the presumed starter when the Aggies open the 2023 season. But Max Johnson dueled at least on even terms with the 5-star recruit on Saturday, helping to lead the White team to a 33-19 victory in the annual Maroon & White Spring Game at Kyle Field.

Johnson accounted for 23 of those points before the 2 QBs switched teams in the 4th quarter. He ended up with 3 touchdown passes. Weigman threw 1.

Weigman and Evan Stewart were in midseason form, connecting for big plays on the 1st 2 drives of the game for the Maroon squad. Both offenses looked like well-oiled machines, with Johnson marching the White team down the field on its 1st couple of drives as well.

But with 7 offensive linemen out of the game for various reasons, the defenses for both teams quickly caught up and the game turned into a defensive battle, with Walter Nolen leading the charge. The offensive lines were so thin that some had to play for both teams.

Weigman led the Maroon team to an early 3-0 lead. A 29-yard field goal by Randy Bond, who kicked for both squads, broke the ice.

Johnson put the White team in front, 6-3, on a 52-yard touchdown pass to Micah Tease. Johnson later broke a 6-6 tie, after a 25-yard field goal from Bond, with a 2-yard TD pass to Fernando Garza.

The Maroon drew even at 13-13 on a 15-yard scoring run by Amari Daniels before Bond connected on a 44-yard field goal just before halftime to lift the White team to a 16-13 edge.

The White team extended its lead to 23-13 on a 1-yard run by Earnest Crownover.

From there, players further down the depth chart saw action.

After switching teams, Weigman marched the White team to a 4th-quarter touchdown on a 23-yard pass to Pierce Turner before setting up a 29-yard field goal by Bond.

Johnson fired a 38-yard scoring strike to Ainias Smith in the final minute of the game.

What started out as a most impressive showing by both quarterbacks quickly turned sloppy, as the defenses took over and both teams gained more yardage on the ground than through the air. Neither quarterback was as sharp as they were at the beginning of the game, but they still had their moments.

The biggest takeaways could be that Texas A&M is capable of moving the football with either quarterback calling the signals, but that Weigman is still very young and needs work.

In addition, the Aggies showed they can play some defense. The defensive line as a unit was impressive on Saturday and was dominant after settling into the game.

The Aggies are very talented with some depth. If they can stay healthy and Weigman continues to develop, it could be a very interesting season in Aggieland.
