Tennessee baseball has used the long ball throughout this season to ascend to the No. 1 team in the land. The Vols mashed again on Thursday, this time at Mississippi State.

They launched a record 7 HRs in an SEC game during a 27-2 victory over the Bulldogs. The Vols poured it on throughout, starting with 3 runs in the first inning, 5 in the third inning, 3 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th, 7 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 4 in the 9th inning.

The early glimpse of the home run onslaught came when Luc Lipcius, Jordan Beck and Drew Gilbert hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to spot the Big Orange a 3-0 lead in the blink of an eye.

The Vols’ tied the single-game program record with seven long balls and totaled a season-high 25 hits on the night. The 25-run margin of victory was the largest for an SEC game in program history, the Vols noted.

Trey Lipscomb, who is in the mix for SEC Player of the Year, went 4-for-4 at the plate, his second game this season with 4 or more hits and his 20th multi-hit outing of the year. Evan Russell also went 4-of-5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. His doubles came in consecutive innings as he posted an extra-bagger in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
